Building Approval
Prior to installation, check with local authorities (council) for any relevant building regulations that may exist.
Suitable Fixing Site
Once you have identified the location for your shade sail it is important to determine the most suitable fixing points for each corner. Some of these points may
already exist e.g.. pergola, sundeck, large tree, fence post or fascia.
This stage of installation is critical. You should
ensure all fixing points are structurally sound and if unsure about fixing points, obtain independent advice from a builder or engineer. A fixing point of at least 2.4m is recommended.
In area to be erected layout sail in a relaxed state to determine suitable fixing points. Allow a minimum of an additional 10% of sail length between each fixing point and the end of the sail fixing accessory for
tensioning.
Attaching to Trees
It is NOT recommended to attach your shade sail to trees.
However if you do intend to do so, it should only be as a temporary structure, to be taken down when not in use and the tree should have a diameter of at least 250mm.
Suitable Location
Before you commence installation it is very
important that you consider the most suitable
location for your shade sail/s. Take into account the following:
-size of the shade sail/s
-strength of structure intended to be any anchor points
-Ability to insert fixing posts
-location of BBQ’s, sun, wind, electric and phone cables, water pipes etc.
Always take into careful consideration all factors
specific to your situation.
Attaching to Buildings
Attaching to fascia
Using a fascia support as an anchor is strongly
recommended. The fascia support is used to connect the overhangs of rafters or trusses to fascias giving strong connections between the two and improving strength. Fascia Supports are available from your local hardware store.
Sail Shapes
Sails can be made to fit many shapes and structures but the most common shapes are.
-
Resort Style (Triangle Sail)
For a resort style we recommend you construct one end at a lower point to the other two ends.
-
Hyperbolic Style (Square Sail)
For a hyperbolic style we recommend that you
construct two diagonal points lower than the other two diagonal points.
-
When establishing your sails low point
please consider suitability for water run off especially when working with Architecture or waterproof Shade sail materials as opposed to regular shade cloth.
